Coverage Loss and Denials

Has your application for Medicaid been denied? Or has your coverage ended (also known as termination or closure)? You may be able to get your coverage back. Or reapplying for new coverage may be easier.

Application Denied

Coverage Ended

My application was denied because I did not send in information asked for by the Department of Vermont Health Access. Can you look at my application again?

Yes, IF you contact us within 30 days after your denial date. We must find that an "extreme circumstance" kept you from sending us the information. Examples are:

  • A severe illness
  • A natural disaster

If there was an "extreme circumstance," we will re-open your application. We will see if you meet the program rules.

What if we cannot find that there was an "extreme circumstance?" We may still be able to use the application you sent us. This would make your new application process easier.

  • What if I wait more than 30 days after my denial date?

If it is within 90 days, we may use the application you sent us. This would make your application process easier. If it is more than 90 days, you must apply again.

My coverage was not renewed because I did not return my renewal form. Or because I did not answer follow up requests. Can you look at my renewal application again?

Yes, IF you contact us within 30 days after your coverage ends. You may get your health coverage back. But we must find that an "extreme circumstance" kept you from sending us the information on time. Examples are:

  • A severe illness
  • A natural disaster

If there was an "extreme circumstance," you will get your coverage back. we will re-start your coverage back on the date it ended. We will work with you to complete your renewal to see if you meet the rules.

What if we cannot find an "extreme circumstance?" We may still be able to use your completed renewal form. This would make your new application process easier.

  • What if I wait more than 30 days after my coverage ended?

If it is within 90 days, we may use your completed renewal form. This would make your application process easier. If it is more than 90 days, you must apply again.
